Internet Explorer 4.01
Microsoft has done almost
all of the work for you with their MSIE 4.01 browser for Windows 3.x.
Best of all it's free!
Here's the link to download the latest and greatest MSIE for
your system:
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/ie4_win16/en/ie4_win16.htm
Follow the instructions provided by Microsoft to complete the download
process.
(Note: It's a large file but worth the wait)
By the way... The main
site for Windows 3.x users is at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/win31/ie3/?/windows/ie/win31/ie3/main.htm
This is a great place to prepare for your download and is loaded with
information.
To setup your connection
use the Internet Connection Wizard
When it asks for an IP
address select "My Internet Provider automatically assigns me
one"
When it asks for DNS Numbers leave them blank (We automatically assign
it when you log in)
That's all there is to it.
When connecting to the
Internet make sure that you use:
yourusername@access
For
older version of IE already installed use this.
When you have Windows 3.1
you will want to use the full IE package from Microsoft, complete with
the Internet Explorer Browser, TCP/IP Dialer, and Mail clients. Here
are some step by step instructions to get IE configured on your
computer.
Creating a New
Dial-in Account
Before you can connect to
the internet you must create a new dialup connection. You can create
several different connections by following the same steps listed
below, but normally you only need one.
-
Click the "New
Connection" icon in the Microsoft Internet Explorer
window. Enter "IOLS" in the field called "new
connection name" and then click "Ok".
-
When asked to pick a
group to place your icon in, choose "Microsoft Internet
Explorer" and click "Ok".
- Fill in the user name that was
listed in the welcome letter your receive from IOLS
and password information that you selected when you registered
with IOLS.
For example,
User Name: yourusername@access
Password: password
Phone Number: xxx-xxxx.
The current list of Dialup access numbers is here:
- Click on the "Properties"
button at the bottom of the screen.
- Place a check in the "Bring
up terminal window after dialing" box. For most dial-in
users the only box that should not be checked is
"Enable dial on demand".
- Click the "Modem"
tab and set the Port and Maximum speed to match setting
appropriate for your modem.
- Click the "Domain Name"
tab and enter "iols.net" (No quotes) in the field called
"Domain Name". Make sure the box for "Server
assigned IP address" is checked.
- Leave the field blank in the box
titled "Primary DNS".
- Click "OK" to
return to the "Connect to" menu, then click "Close",
followed by "Yes" to finish making the dial-in
connection.
Connecting to the Net
- When you want to connect to the
internet, double-click the telephone icon you created in the
previous step.
- Click the "Connect"
button.
- When your computer establishes a
connection with the host computer a terminal window will appear.
Enter your login name (yourusername@access) and password.
- Once you have successfully logged in
you will see a stream of random characters begin to move across
your screen. This is the PPP protocol beginning to try and
establish a connection with your computer. At that time, click the
"Continue" button. The dialer program will finish
setting up your PPP connection and minimize itself to a small icon
on your desktop.
Ending your connection
- Select the minimized connection icon
on your system by double-clicking it.
- If you don't see the minimized
connection icon, hold the 'ALT' key down and press the 'TAB' key
until you see your connection. Let go of the keys when your
connection is on screen.
- Click the "Disconnect"
button.
Setting up E-mail
- When you start the Mail program a
Logon window will appear.
Enter yourusername and password.
Your name and password for mail are the same as those used to
connect to the internet (Excluding the @access for yourusername)
through the dial-in process.
- If this is the first time Mail is
run you must enter additional information about your mail service
so IE knows where to get your mail from, and how to send it.
- When the "Mail
Settings" window appears, click the "Continue"
button.
- Enter the appropriate information
about yourself on the "User Information" window.
Your E-mail address is your user name, followed by iols.net. For
example:
Full name:
Bill Newuser
E-mail address:
yourusername@iols.net
- The PC name entry should also be set
to your E-mail address.
- The Mail Protocol information should
be "Retrieve mail using: Pop-3" and "Send
mail using: SMTP".
- Click the "OK"
button when you're done.
- The options on the next window, "Retrieve
Mail Settings" should be set as listed below. Please
don't make any other changes to mail setting or mail may not work.
POP3 server:
mail.iols.net
Login name: (This should be set to
yourusername)
Password: (This is the same password
used to dial in.)
Check for new mail every 30 minutes
After getting mail - Delete copy of mail
on server
- The last setup window for mail is
"Send Mail Settings". On the "SMTP server:
" make sure the line says mail.iols.net
Checking your mail
- Start the "Mail"
client in the "Microsoft Internet Explorer"
folder.
- Enter your user name and password.
- When mail starts running your
mailbox will be checked. If you want to manually force mail to
check your mailbox, select "File" and "Check
Mail" on the Mail client tool bar.
