Everyone has an email
client on their PC or Mac. It's usually one of these programs:
Outlook Express, Outlook and /or Netscape Mail. Which one you
use is entirely up to you.
Email is easy to figure out. One thing to remember is that in
order for you to send and receive email you must be connected to the
Internet. You can download your email and then disconnect from
the Internet to read it (Unless you are using WebMail).
When you want to send a message you must first "Compose" a
new message. Click on the button on your email
client that says "Compose" or New".
Once it's composed all you have to do is send it. Click on the
button called "Send".
To get messages you need to connect to the Internet first and then
click on "Send/Rcv" button. New message are delivered
to your "Inbox" by default.
More help on using all the features with your email is available by
clicking on the "Help" menu item in your email client and
selecting the appropriate topic.

Why
do I get "550 Relaying denied" when I try to send email?
The reasons you are getting the
"550 Relaying denied" error is because you are trying to
send email through your IOLS email account when you are connected to
the Internet via another provider or you are connected to IOLS and
using another providers email account.
This is called relaying and we do not allow it since that is something
Spammers do to cover their tracks.
The solution to your trouble is to connect to the Internet using your
IOLS dialup account before you send mail using your IOLS email
account. When you are connected to IOLS and send a message to a valid
email address anywhere using your IOLS email account it will be
delivered.
Another solution when using the iols.com mail server and our IOLS
email account is to simply check for new messages before attempting to
send any messages. (Note: If you have messages in your
"Outbox" you will need to delete them before clicking on
send/rcv)
To use the new server all you have to do is make sure the outgoing
mail server in your email client to mail.iols.com
Please follow these instructions:
- Open Outlook / Outlook Express
- Click on Tools
- Click on Accounts
- Click on the Mail Tab
- Double click on your IOLS email account listing
- Click on the Servers Tab
- Change the entry in the outgoing mail server field from
mail.iols.net to mail.iols.com
- Click OK to save the settings click OK/Close to close the Accounts
window
- Close Outlook / Outlook Express
That's all that's needed and you should not have any trouble at all.

Where's
the best place to get information on my modem
With all the new changes
in technology it's not surprising that most modems, even new ones,
need to be upgraded. You're best source for modem upgrades is
from the manufacturer of your modem. If you don't know who
manufactured your modem then go to the manufacturer of your PC web
site.

Why
can't I connect at 56k?
You will almost never
connect at 56k(And we say "Almost" because there's a
.000000001% chance that you could...). There's many reasons for
this:
-
The primary reason for
this is that you are limited by your own phone lines and the phone
lines and switches that your local telephone company uses.
Usually the best that you can do, if everything is close to
perfect, is 52k - 53k. Average speeds with most systems will
range from 44k - 52k. Other reasons are...
-
You need the latest
modem drivers, firmware updates and patches from your modem
manufacturer.
-
You are running on an
original version of Windows 95 and have not upgraded to at least
Microsoft Dialup Networking 1.2
-
You have noise on your
telephone line.
I
have a hard time staying connected or I can go anywhere!
Here's some other things
to consider...
First, make sure that you have the latest firmware upgrade for the
modem from the manufacturer or PC manufacturer (Check their web
sites). Install as needed.
Second, make sure you have the latest Dialup Networking patch from
Microsoft. The upgrades for this are easily installed when you upgrade
to the latest version of Internet Explorer
Also, please do the following (Assuming that your account is active
with IOLS):
1. Check your Network Protocols to make sure you don't have any
components in there that you don't need. Assuming you're on a Win95/98
platform, open your "My Computer" icon and get into your
Control Panels. In the Network control panel, you'll see at list
of network components. The only ones you need for your IOLS
connection are Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Any additional
protocols (even those you might need for an internal network) can
cause a conflict that might result in disconnects.
2. For more information on tweaking modems to get them to
cooperate with the new standard, look at "The
IOLS v.90 Tech Center", http://www.56k.com/
or http://www.v90.com/.
3. Outlandish as it may sound, it is worth doing the following
just to rule it out as a potential source of problems: have your phone
lines tested for noise by your local telephone company. If they
suffer from excessive noise, which might impair data flow if not voice
flow, that can explain the disconnects as well, or be a contributing
factor. Click here for the procedure
on testing you own telephone lines.
4. Visit the following site:
http://www.spy.net/~dustin/modem/
If you are connecting via a Win95/98 platform, or are using Config PPP
on a Mac to connect, you can apply an init (initialization) string to
the properties of your connection file and it will help stabilize the
connection. You can obtain the string from the above site
(follow the steps when you get there) and then you can plug it in to
your properties using the following guidelines:
Config PPP on a Mac: Beneath the field where the phone number is
recorded is a place for the init string.
Win95/98: Open My Computer
Open Dial-Up Networking
Right-click on your iols file, choose properties
Click the "configure" button
Go to the "connection" tab
Click "advanced"
In the field entitled "extra settings" enter the init string
you got at the above site.
Click OK on any screens still open, try to connect
Note: We have found that in many cases using the string
"AT&F" (No quotes) works very well with most modems.
5. Try adding 2 - 4 commas after the dialup number.
6. If none of the above do the trick, your next step, if you
have not already done it, is to call the Modem or PC Manufacturer help
desk. Because, at this point you have ruled out everything that
could be wrong with your dialup settings.

The
computer you dialed is not answering...
-
Always retry your
connection when you first get this error. In most cases your modem
simply does not connect right the first time.
-
There might be busy
signals - To find out, manually dial the local number to see if you
hear a busy signal or related. If not, retry your call.
-
There may be a problem
with connection integrity. If our server cannot define your modem,
it will disconnect you. This may be caused by your line integrity,
or common V.90 issues. If so, a temporary solution that we find
useful is to use two commas at the end of the local number.
This will connect you at a lower speed, but at the same time, gain
the integrity needed to stay online.
-
Please
review the other FAQ's on this page for more information.
-
In rare cases, we found
that it might be handy to re-install your TCP/IP protocol if you are
using Windows. Browse our tech support pages to see how this is
done.
